Nelson’s Candies/Local’s Café have rounded up some great blues acts for this late winter/early spring season. Owner Doug Nelson could barely contain himself when discussing his next three artists. For the uninitiated, Nelson hosts blues acts on a monthly basis at his Wilton, New Hampshire candy shop, which also holds a stage and an a small auditorium in the same location, hence the Local’s Cafe. Blues fans get to bring their own beverages, which saves the cost of buying drinks at a bar while checking out the latest and greatest blues acts in a professional listening room environment. The candy shop/blues venue is across the street from the legendary Wilton Town Hall Movie Theater where film goers can check great glorious movies from past decades as well as newer, more avant-garde features earlier in the day.
On February 20th, Nelson’s will host Tony Law & The Dream Machine featuring Chuck Langford on saxophone. These incredible artists have performed with the likes of The Temptations, Solomon Burke, Mighty Sam McClain and Toni Lynn Washington. Charles ‘Chuck’ Langford’s CD ‘That’s Wassup’ was nominated for a 2008 Grammy.
“Tony Law and Chuck Langford have played with all the great artists from that time. It’s going to be a great show,” Nelson said. Tickets $25 for Tony Law & The Dream Machine featuring Chuck Langford.
On May 14th, local greater-Boston/New England favorite Professor Harp will take the stage at Nelson’s Candies/Local’s Café to wow the crowd with his amazing and various techniques on the blues harp. His solid baritone singing voice is also part of the attraction, as is the three top notch players behind him. Professor Harp used to get called up on stage by Muddy Waters whenever Muddy Waters was playing in Boston. Calling himself The Undaunted Professor Harp, this blues man has had to battle racism, hard city life, and an ever changing music scene to arrive at where he is today. His CD They Call Me The Professor has received positive reviews and plenty of airplay. Tickets are $20 for The Undaunted Professor Harp at Nelson’s.
“The Professor is a good guy. He always puts on a good show with his singing and his harmonica,” Nelson said. “He’s got a good mix of blues, oldies.”
Coming on July 23rd is another local favorite, The Willie J. Laws Band. WJLB have been nominated for a Boston Music Award and are nominated for their second New England Music Award. If fact, by the time this show takes place, WJLB may be winners at that awards show for their second nomination in the NEMA Blues Act Of The Year award. Anything is possible when it comes to the larger the life personality of Willie J. Laws and the big talent he and his band mates bring to the stage in the New England blues scene and around the country and around the world. His July 2014 CD Release Cornbread Moan has received several rave reviews and ample airplay. Laws wrote most the material for the disc. Tickets are $20 for The Willie J. Laws Band at Nelson’s.
“Willie always draws a good crowd here,” Nelson said. “He has a solid following, and they just love him. It’s a really great time when they’re here.”
