“Blue Horn” benefit created beautiful music, loving vibe

Yesterday saw an amazing display of love and talent at JJ’s Sports Bar in Northboro, Massachusetts. A benefit held there for the hugely popular and well liked Johnny “Blue Horn” Moriconi brought together a tremendous bulk of talent while an appreciate, supportive audience created one of the most beautiful vibes to found in a local music venue. The house’s sound man, Jim Kalil, kept all of the bands sounding fantastic throughout the day long event and all but one were large ensembles. I hope JJ’s pays him well.

Booty Vortex say goodbye to Johnny D’s; singer discusses venue closing

Booty Vortex said goodbye to the soon to be closed Johnny D’s bar-restaurant-music venue in Somerville, Massachusetts last Saturday night. In an inspired farewell performance this funk-disco-dance band kept their fans on their feet dancing all night long while playing many of the oldies and funk classics that fans have come to depend on. Throughout, Booty Vortex’s lead vocalist Julia Tizzano Cruz kept reminding everybody present how the venue has supported the band over the years in many ways, like keeping the band in a six to eight week rotation.

Nicole Knox Murphy

Nicole Knox Murphy inspires with her long musical journey

Nicole Knox Murphy has been on quite a musical journey these last ten years. Murphy became a lead singer for her father’s country band in her home state of Vermont when she was only 14. She continued singing with his very busy band until just after she got married. Then, her schedule was less busy and when her father retired, she was grounded. By then, she was living in her adopted state of New Hampshire. Raising three children and supporting her family took up much of her time, until her children were grown. Then, while spending a year recovering from back surgery, she picked up her old acoustic guitar and started picking away.

A Night For Sam Gentile benefit schedule for this Sunday, Feb 14

Whenever anybody in the greater-Boston blues community is down and out with medical expenses and no way to cover it with a musician’s salary, the community comes together like a tightly knit blanket.

Nelson’s Candies-Local’s Café announce upcoming shows: Tony Law, Professor Harp, Willie J. Laws Band

Nelson’s Candies/Local’s Café have rounded up some great blues acts for this late winter/early spring season. Owner Doug Nelson could barely contain himself when discussing his next three artists. For the uninitiated, Nelson hosts blues acts on a monthly basis at his Wilton, New Hampshire candy shop, which also holds a stage and an a small auditorium in the same location, hence the Local’s Cafe. Blues fans get to bring their own beverages, which saves the cost of buying drinks at a bar while checking out the latest and greatest blues acts in a professional listening room environment. The candy shop/blues venue is across the street from the legendary Wilton Town Hall Movie Theater where film goers can check great glorious movies from past decades as well as newer, more avant-garde features earlier in the day.

Goli carries original sound far on This Is Not A Love Song CD

Goli carries original sound far on This Is Not A Love Song CD

After years of hard work and playing out, Goli has now released their first full length debut CD. This Is Not A Love Song is an excellent document of what midi marimba player Vessela Stoyanova and cellist Valerie Thompson can achieve with their imaginative uses of their instruments, instruments one does not too often find in rock and pop combos. Ten years is a lot of time for a combo to find their sound and perfect it. The two women started out as part of Boston’s progressive rock band Fluttr Effect before finding themselves playing and singing together within this tighter two woman combo. Stoyanova can dial in a lot of different keyboard sounds from her midi marimba and Thompson can play anything from traditional cello to rock and roll low end lines on her own instruments.

Johnny “Blue Horn” Moriconi, musician, survivor; fundraiser set for Feb 21

Johnny “Blue Horn” Moriconi has been down for a while but he certainly isn’t out. Last spring, Boston’s hugely popular blues musician Moriconi noticed that the hearing in his right ear was getting poorer. When he had it checked out he discovered he had a benign brain tumor in the back of his head. He’s now recovering from radiosurgery he had three weeks ago. The good news is that he’s already back to sitting in on some gigs, as a singer and playing his trademark Holton MF Admiral blue-lacquer trumpet.
