Professor Harp to play Nelson’s Candies Saturday May 16th

SONY DSCNobody can resist two great things at once. Professor Harp will bring his Boston blues style to a special Granite State venue Saturday, May 16th.

Marking his second appearance at the fun, quirky, Nelson‘s Candies, the Professor will play to a receptive audience. New Hampshire knows the Professor well. In a good way.

First, a few words about the venue. Then, I’ll give you the inside scoop on Professor Harp.

Who would’ve ever guessed that a candy store in the middle of New Hampshire could also be a music venue? After 12 years of offering all kinds of music in his Wilton, New Hampshire candy shop, Doug Nelson began specifically presenting blues bands, just over two years ago.

And after presenting Willie J. Laws Band, Gil Correia Band, Chris Fitz Band, Luther “Guitar Junior and many other notables from the New England blues scene, Nelson’s Candies has become enshrined as a blues Mecca.

Located across the street from Wilton’s historic Town Hall movie theater, Nelson’s Candies becomes, one Saturday night a month, a scene of merriment, with blues musicians, blues fans, and local citizens enjoying a festive B.Y.O.B. party.

Nelson’s Candies charges $20 per most shows and a bit more on specific acts. Patrons make up the difference by not having to spend over $5 a draft beer, as they do when they see a band inside a bar.

On Saturday May 16th, Nelson’s Candies will present a taste of the Boston blues scene for local New Hampshire blues fans. The Undaunted Professor Harp will bring his unique blend of blues, roots music, and oldies rock and roll to the Wilton, New Hampshire candy shop/blues venue. With his electric harmonica techniques, Professor Harp can conjure the full sound of a Hammond organ. He also sings with a dyed in the wool blues timbre and the soul of a man who has lived the blues.

ProfessorHarpCDCoverArtProfessor Harp is no stranger to New Hampshire’s blues scene. He has played Nelson’s Candies in the past and he performed at last year’s Barnful Of Blues Festival in New Boston.

Having started out in the Boston area in the late 1960s, Professor Harp is an old pro who used to get called to the stage by Muddy Waters whenever Muddy was in town. Below is a link to a Feature Article I wrote about the Professor last year as he was gearing up for his Barnful appearance.

For now, local New Hampshire blues fans can check out the Professor and his band at Nelson’s Candies/Local’s Café in beautiful Wilton, New Hampshire. The doors will open at 7:00 p.m. A house band will open this B.Y.O.B. event. The Professor will also have some CDs to sell, so you can bring his sound home with you.
