Dan Lawson Band created huge waves of sound at acoustically perfect Uncle Eddie’s
Dan Lawson Band found a receptive audience at Uncle Eddies on Salisbury Beach, Massachusetts last Saturday night. Lawson’s high octane guitar work went over big with regulars, bikers, tourists, and anybody out looking to have a good time. Lawson and his rhythm section came up with a lot of sound for a three piece and the acoustics at Uncle Eddies are superb for an outfit like this. Low, tiled ceiling, carpeted floor, and a spacious area that runs directly from stage to the front of the venue couldn’t be beat for the sound to travel.
Delta Generators rocked Smoken’ Joe’s BBQ & Blues
Delta Generators have been on a roll since they won the Boston Blues Challenge in 2008 and landed in the top ten at International Blues Competition in Memphis months later. Their appearance at Brighton’s Smoken’ Joe’s BBQ & Blues last Friday night marked the debut of an exceptional band at an exceptional venue. Like my bowl of chili went well with my andouille burger, the band and the venue were a perfect match.
BATW rocked Capone’s last night; blues jam continues successful run
Lee Hawkins has come a long way in the last several months with his Backs Against The Wall Blues Jam. Held every Thursday night at Capone’s in Peabody, Massachusetts, BATW Blues Jam is hosted by Lee Hawkins Band, and it has been featuring many of the biggest names in the greater-Boston/New England blues scene. Last night, Parker Wheeler was on hand to lend his vocal and harmonica skills. Other guests helped Hawkins make last night another winning time for area musicians and music fans.
Howard Randall & Mickey Maguire run nice blues jam at Boondocks
Howard Randall and Mickey Maguire have been hosting the Wednesday night open mic jam at Boondocks Tavern & Country Grill for several weeks now. They’ve got it down to a system of not having a system, leaving it pretty free for players to come up and jam almost at will. This made for interesting combos […]
Lisa Guyer finds success with Monday Night Muse, so do young musicians
The torch has been passed from one generation to another. Lisa Guyer has come a long way in the past two years with her Lisa Guyer Music Empowerment Program. Her one week course has become popular with young student learners as well as their parents. Guyer has a side project of her music course called […]
Racky Thomas Band educated Smoken’ Joe’s audience
With smoking hot harmonica and vocals, Racky Thomas celebrated his Fourth Of July weekend at Brighton’s Smoken’ Joe’s BBQ & Blues last night. With a crack band behind him, Thomas blew and sang with the passion he’s become known for over the years. Often, he played through an electric harp microphone that gave his melodies […]
Monkeys With Hammers rocked Whippersnappers in Londonderry, NH last night
Monkeys With Hammers is a formidable power rock cover trio. Consisting of guitarist-vocalist Chris Lester, bassist-vocalist Rich Knox, and drummer Eric Wagley, MWH played to an enthusiastic audience at Whippersnappers in Londonderry, New Hampshire last night. It didn’t take long to realize this trio has stage chemistry and camaraderie. They’re having so much fun playing together that they make it look easy to do what they do, even though some of their material is quite challenging.
Aerosmith are genetically incapable of making a bad album
There are many theories and opinions floating around the music scene. My most favorite opinion, because it is so laughable, is that Aerosmith stopped making good albums between Rocks and Permanent Vacation. Others say that the bad boys of Boston never made another good album after Permanent Vacation. This is a bunch of hogwash. The reality is this: Aerosmith is genetically incapable of making a bad album.
Downtown Dave And The Deep Pockets blues up Boondocks
They come into a town to show people what real blues is all about. Downtown Dave And The Deep Pockets came to Boondocks Tavern & Country Grill last Saturday night. What a show it was at the Weare, New Hampshire venue. Fronted by singer-harmonica player Dave Glannon, the Deep Pockets featured their former guitarist Jimmy Kokolis filling in for Mike Revela and bassist Mickey Maguire filling in for Joe Zangri. Even with substitute players, there was no holding back the blues power that this quartet could muster. They whipped up the kind of blues that people will travel miles to hear.
Gracie Curran & The High Falutin’ Band offer a mixed bag on Proof Of Love CD
Gracie Curran & The High Falutin’ Band recorded a fine party album for their debut Proof Of Love. This CD has plenty of energy, swinging horns, danceable beats, swirling organ chords, music that just makes one think of a good time. It is certainly cool that Curran has a vocal timbre that is reminiscent of the great early 20th century blues and jazz vocalists. She might remind one of anyone from Billie Holiday to Etta James. The only problem is that Curran, either by nature or lack of practice, doesn’t have the rangy power of any of those old times great. She doesn’t even come close.
