Guitarist and Berklee College Of Music professor Joe Musella with his top-notch band will play the entire classic Steely Dan’s album Aja and more on October 1st at 8:00 p.m.
Musella has been gathering his musician friends to recreate the music of great classic rock albums for ten years. He began over a decade ago at his weekly Wednesday night bar gig in Framingham . The band, which also included bassist Tom Appleman and singer Peter Farese, are still part of the current line up. They would keep themselves entertained on slow nights at their weekly house gig by seeing how many tunes they could play from their favorite albums by Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Who, and many others.
Eventually, that weekly house gig came to an end. By that time, they had a huge repertoire which they wanted to do something with. Appleman, in 2010, booked their first “album show” at Berklee’s performance center. They performed the entire Abbey Road album.
Since then they have played Houses Of the Holy, The White Album, Dark Side of The Moon, and Thriller. Led Zeppelin II is scheduled for January.
“Tom and I alternate band leader chores,” Musella said. “Aja has always been a personal favorite because of the brilliant blend of rock and jazz. The music is very challenging, and the core rhythm section has been rehearsing it since early summer.”
Musella’s 12 piece band includes himself on lead vocals and guitar, Peter Farese on lead vocals and guitar, Tom Appleman on bass, Bill D’Agostino on drums , John Mulroy on keyboards, Dino Govoni on sax, Hiro Tokushige on trumpet, Bobby “Breeze” Holfelder on trombone, Andrew Beckman on keyboards, Mike Beckman on acoustic guitar, Lydia Harrell on vocals, and Marcia J. Macres on vocals. Most of the lineup are Berklee faculty. Others instruct at other music schools.
Musella has been on the faculty for 17 years. He specializes in teaching classic and contemporary rock guitar. he also authored a course for Berklee Online which has been successfully running for about eight years, called ‘Classic Rock Workshop’.
