The station’s mission is to promote the power of local independent artists, with hopes of helping them establish their fan bases and to have a chance at getting “discovered.”
Markovich was motivated to start his station after hearing a lot of great music in his Rhode Island music scene. “Some of the best music is still on the local level,” Markovich said.
Rogue Island Radio focuses on Rhode Island artists, New England artists, and then the world. So it includes local artists, as defined by artists who play out locally in their own cities, towns, states, regions, from around the world.
Although Rogue Island Radio is listed as an indie station it only uses the term “indie” as it was originally intended, not as a genre but as an independent artist not supported by the larger labels.
“One of the joys of owning the station is playing songs from around the area, of friends and colleagues,” Markovich said.
Rogue Island Radio.com, which has been heard in 73 countries, will celebrate its first anniversary this December 18. The station offers a wide variety of programming:
The Tony Jones Show on Monday nights 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Jones offers talk, rock, punk, rockabilly, and special local guests.
The New England Local Music Café, on Tuesday nights 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. playing the best local music from New England artists.
Saturday Songwriter Sessions, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. playing the best independent songwriters
Sunday Blues and Bloodies, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. playing the best independent blues artists.
