Jennifer Lopez created a stir once again by donning an eye catching outfit. A few years back, Lopez wore the open, see-through Versace dress at the Grammy Awards. Two weeks ago, she performed on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve wearing a skin-tight catsuit.
J Lo’s dark catsuit looked almost sheer under the huge spotlights and in the rain as she performed two songs outdoors in New York City’s Time Square. A dancer, Lopez executed many moves that put even more emphasis on her curves.
That performance, which ended about 15 minutes before the new year, has created some controversy. Some people thought her outfit was too sheer, leaving little to the imagination. Others thought she looked incredibly gorgeous for a woman who recently gave birth to twins.
Me? I don’t think it is a big deal. Dancers wear leotards. Thespians wear leotards. Circus performers wear leotards. I don’t see what else they could move around in comfortably that would also allow viewers to appreciate all of their complex maneuvers.
Many of us have friends and relatives who took dance lessons. When we had to go to someone’s first dance recital, the dancers/students were all wearing costumes that were basically leotards.
Granted, Jennifer Lopez isn’t an 11 year old girl at her first dance recital. She’s 41 year old woman who has some meat on her bones that give her great curves. So, you know this was exciting to the male population and either impressive or intimidating to the female population. I read one woman’ quote in a newspaper article that said Lopez’s unitard bunched up like “elephant skin” at some points. Gee, I can only glimpse the depth of that woman’s catty remark and what might make her say something like that.
My friend Robin said Lopez looked “smoking hot” and that she couldn’t take her eyes off of Lopez during that performance. I had to agree. I was celebrating New Year’s Eve at The Village Trestle in Goffstown, New Hampshire when I saw Lopez prancing around in her catsuit. I walked over to the largest TV in the room to check it out. After I got home much later, I found that the video was already posted on YouTube. So, I know that at least two other people liked it as much as I did.
Lopez has an exciting presence that goes beyond physical appearance. That is why she is a movie star as well as a music star. When you see her in movies like Selena, Angel Eyes, Enough, Anaconda, The Cell, and many others, she seems to slither around the set and when she walks toward the camera or the camera goes in for a close- up, her face and body seemed to jump right out of the screen at you.
So, it seems a likely conclusion that Lopez, during her New Year’s Eve performance, only did what she gets paid to do. She put on a show and she was glamorous, sexy, exciting, and talented. That is why Dick Clark Productions picked a star of her name recognition and sex appeal to close out the new year. Lopez is also about to drop a new CD soon so she was looking to gain as much exposure as possible.
Anyone who has something to sell will utilize any vehicle to sell it. I have a new online music magazine. I have to push it. I was posting the news about the upcoming online music magazine so often that I spent a good portion of Christmas day being roasted by my family. My friends were teasing me about it on Facebook too. But, you know, all that teasing played into my marketing strategy. When my friends from the music scene ran into me, they would say something about the new online music mag launching on January 10, 2010 at 10:00 a.m.
I’m sure Lopez and her handlers and Dick Clark Productions are very happy that the cat suit performance was posted all over YouTube and written about in newspapers and webzines. YouTube said one video was removed due to a copyright claim from Dick Clark Productions. Hmmm. Could Dick Clark be planning to sell Lopez’s own performance back to her in order to make ever further profit from it? Could Jennifer Lopez be planning to include the segment in a future DVD package? If she is, then I don’t think she minds the pre-publicity extravaganza.
But, I think something more must be said. After I watch the segment several times I found myself with a new found respect for Jennifer Lopez. I’m not really a huge fan of her music. Her movies are not among my favorites. But what I saw in that New Year’s Eve segment was not just a sex symbol. I saw a true professional giving it her all and putting on a show in the cold, rainy night of December 31, 2009. I saw a woman looking great in a cat suit even though she recently gave birth to twins. I also saw a woman who was unconcerned that her belly wasn’t completely back to its original dimensions. A woman who didn’t care that her bodysuit bunched up a few times. I saw the professional side of Jennifer Lopez. I saw a woman who did her job, working with other dancers, singing with pre-recorded backup vocals, on what had to be a slippery stage, and I saw her do it all with a huge happy smile on her face. Bravo to Ms. Lopez. Bravo to her smoking hot body!
